On September 30, we went down to the gym and took pictures with everyone that had an orange shirt. The last residential school was closed in 1996. Before the last residential school was closed there was a girl named Phyllis who went to school with a new, bright orange shirt. When she got there they made her change into different clothes. Then they cut her hair just below her ears.

(We watched several short videos that talked about what residential schools are, and why we acknowledge this day. We read books that told about what some indigenous people experienced when taken to these schools. After many discussions, we designed our own paper orange shirts. We made orange hearts that told how we can help others feel that they matter. We finished off the week creating our own memory bag, with pictures and writings that told what things we would have missed if we had to go away to school, what we would want to take with us, or even memories that we would want to keep. ~ Mrs. Tervoort)
