Wow! It is finally the end of June! How did that happen? It just seems like yesterday that this awesome group of kids walked into my classroom in September, ready to learn, ask questions and keep life interesting! And now, we are trying to wrap up so many things in the next week before we all get that well-deserved (and totally needed) summer break! The last few weeks of June have included the last of our swimming lessons, a Music Medley, a Math Day, a Celebration of Reading, a field trip to Mariash Quarries (to end our Science unit on Rocks and Minerals) as well as a stop at the local ice cream shop, our school Tabloid Day a class party with the Gr. 5/6 class, and our final day with a Celebration of Excellence. Throw in report cards, and it has been crazy busy!
Our Subjects (in review)... - In Math, we worked through all of our multiplication facts from 0x0, to 10x10, as well as working on division, to see how these facts relate to each other! We also worked on a unit on Measurement. For fun, we also been learned how to play Cribbage, using our skills in addition, problem-solving and strategy! - In ELA, we were busy with our Daily 5 program, with Word Work, Writing, Reading, ATRT (typing skills), Listening to Reading, and our TUSC time. We ended the year doing a Roald Dahl study, reading a variety of his novels and stories with a partner or in small groups. - In Science we finished the year studying Rocks and Minerals. We ended the unit with a field trip to Mariash Quarry, where we used the information we learned about rocks, as well as hunting for our very own fossils! We highly recommend this site, as it has so much to offer on this topic! - In Social Studies, we traveled across Canada. We learned about each province, as well as indigenous groups throughout the country. - Our Grade 4 to 6 classes enjoyed our collaboration time, working on the 7 Teachings. We finished our look at RESPECT (and being kind to everyone) by creating some 'thank you cards' to send out to people we respect or wanted to thank for something they have done for us. We moved on to HUMILITY in December, to appreciate what we have, but to also help others. Our two classes collected items to create a Christmas hamper for a family in need, through our local Christmas Cheer Board! We then talked about LOVE, just in time for "I Love to Read" activities in February, along with Valentine's Day! We displayed hearts, filled with people, things and activities that we love! Our next teaching was COURAGE. We created and displayed posters with either quotes that we found from others, or ones that we wrote ourselves. We moved on to HONESTY. We created masks that displayed the "face" that we show to others, and on the back, some things (words/pictures) that we don't always let others see. Our next teaching was WISDOM, where we had an opportunity to share our talents and skills with others. The final teaching was TRUTH, the understanding of all of the 7 teachings and how they relate to each other. Our last project was designing a pendant of the teaching that was our favourite or the one we thought was most important. - We also had many collaboration classes in Math, where the Grade 5/6 class taught our Grade 4 students a variety of Math games.
So much to do and learn! Now to rest...and start planning for some new adventures for September!
